Additional information

RUDISHA CONNECTION
Born in Ntulele in Narok County, the same county as Olympic champion David RUDISHA. MANANGOI's father, Nelson, was a former national standard 400m sprinter and one-time rival of Daniel RUDISHA, the 1968 Olympic 4x400m silver medallist and David's father. (iaaf.org 11 Nov 2017)

NEW DISTANCE
A former 400m runner, who ran 46.5, was frustrated to finish only sixth at the World Championship Trials and sought a new challenge. "When I was training for the 400m, I would always do well in the endurance sessions. I also remember my old coach, Colm O’CONNELL, telling me I could one day become world 1500m champion." (iaaf.org 11 Nov 2017)

COMMONWEALTH DEBUT
In his first full season of 1500m running, made the Kenyan team for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, finishing 12th in the 1500m final. (g2014results.thecgf.com, 11 Mar 2018)

SILVER LINING
At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, won a silver medal in the 1500m, behind his inspiration and fellow Kenyan, Asbel KIPROP. "I knew I was in the medal bracket, but to win a silver was amazing. I learned so much from Asbel. He is like a brother to me." (iaaf.org, 7 Nov 2018)

GOAT'S BLOOD
After winning 2015 World Championship silver in Beijing: "I went back home to celebrate and more than 2000 people turned up in my home village. As a Maasai, I celebrated by drinking the blood of a goat." (iaaf.org, 23 Dec 2017)

PERFECT EXECUTION
In 2017, set a world leading mark and personal best of 3:28.80 to win in Monaco, claiming victory in his final pre-World Championship outing. "Running 3:28 gave me a huge amount of confidence." (iaaf.org 7 Nov 2018)

WORLD CHAMPION
In the 2017 World Championship 1500m final in London, used his training partner, Timothy CHERUIYOT, to his advantage. "I knew he (CHERUIYOT) was a very strong lapper, but maybe he doesn’t have that kick finish." Tracking CHERUIYOT for the bulk of the race, he relied on his trademark acceleration down the home straight to strike gold. "It was an unexplainable moment." (iaaf.org 7 Nov 2018)

DEFEAT
Had to settle for second in the Kenyan Commonwealth Games Trials in the 1500m, 0.58 behind Timothy CHERUIYOT, the world silver medallist. (africaathle.com, 26 Feb 2018)

HONOUR
Flagbearer at the Opening Ceremony of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. (GC2018, 3 Apr 2018)
