Injuries

"Basically lost a full season," due to back and hamstring problems in 2014. (iaaf.org, 28 Nov 2017)

Reason: "One of the earliest races I recall was in Lelmokwo when I ran a 10,000m in standard six. I finished last and was lapped a couple of times. Back then I thought running was the hardest thing in the world." (iaaf.org, 28 Nov 2016)
Hero: Footballer Didier DROGBA (CIV). “I liked his style of play. I remember one goal he scored for Chelsea when he appeared to turn 360 degrees.? (iaaf.org, 28 Nov 2016)
Additional information

MATURITY
Time has taught him many valuable lessons in the sport. "Over time, you grow up and learn about priorities. Sub-par performances and injuries (back and hamstring) teach you that, at a senior level, you cannot play around. In 2013, I was convinced I was going to win the IAAF World Championships in Moscow and was very disappointed to take silver. I lost to a legend (Ezekiel KEMBOI, KEN) and two years later had to swallow that pill once more, as I finished second (to KEMBOI) at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing. (iaaf.org, 23 Oct 2017)

THIRD TIME LUCKY
After World Championship silver medals in 2013 and 2015, struck gold in the steeplechase at the 2017 edition in London. (reuters.com, 9 Aug 2017)

OLYMPIC GOLD
Secured top spot on the Olympic steeplechase podium at Rio 2016, in an Olympic record time of 8:03.28. (bbc.com, 18 Aug 2016)

LONDON WOE
Suffered big disappointment in stepplechase at the 2012 London Olympic Trials. "I lost all energy and finished sixth. I couldn’t understand how I had not made the team and cried for most of the rest of the day. I bounced back by winning the world U20 title the next month in a championship record of 8:06. A week later, I won my first Diamond League in Monaco in a personal best of 8:03.49." (iaaf.org, 28 Nov 2017)

LATE CHANCE
Given a wildcard to compete at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, after being taking ill just before the trials. "Shortly after arriving in Nairobi, I started feeling unwell and doctors advised me not to run. I wanted to compete and make it to the squad for Australia, but after becoming sick, I requested the wildcard."
