PERSONAL: Andrew HOBDELL (, 13 Mar 2018)

Bout of tendinitis in feet, coupled with a hip labral tear, led him to abandon plans to compete in marathon at 2014 European Championships in Zurich, Switzerland. (, 4 Jul 2017)

Reason: â€śI was 17 in August 2003 when my brother, Conor, first dragged me down the country to run a small road race, the Monaghan 5k. I had never gone running before and was in no way healthy or fit. However, I managed to run roughly 17:30 and was the first junior home.â€? (, 21 Oct 2013)
Ambition: "The long-term goal is the 2020 Tokyo Olympics." (, 4 Jul 2017)
Additional information

The former Irish junior cross-country international had drifted away from running to focus on his medical career. Graduated as a doctor, was six months into a role working in A&E at Belfast City Hospital, when he tagged along with a pal on a triathlon training trip. "I’d thought I’d get a bit of sun and, although I can’t swim to save my life, I was easily keeping up on the runs. I sat outside the hotel having a few beers, when I thought back to competing at European and World Cross-Country Championships as a junior and said, if I put my mind to it I could make the Olympic Games. I asked my boss if I could take a year off to train for the Olympics, and she said, 'yes'." (, 4 Jul 2017)

Ran 2012 Dublin Marathon on a whim and recorded qualification time for 2013 Moscow World Championships. "It was crazy and at first I didn’t believe it." Finished 21st in Moscow, in a time of 2:16.42, despite suffering an untimely calf muscle tear just 10 days out from event. (, 4 Jul 2017)

Brother Noel is one of the UK's leading sports doctors and currently works for UK Athletics. (, 13 Mar 2018)
