Nickname: M D (teamscotland.scot, Sep 2017)
Occupation: Athlete
Coach

PERSONAL: Tore GUSTAFSSON (SWE) (britishathletics.org.uk, 27 Jun 2016)

Reason: Took up athletics in army cadets as a boy, initially throwing the javelin. Began to take athletics more seriously after joining Elgin Athletics Club in Scotland. The club did not have any javelins, so coach suggested he try the hammer throw instead. (inthewinningzone.com, 31 Jul 2009) (inthewinningzone.com, 31 Jul 2009)
Memorable: Selected to compete at Rio 2016 Olympic Games. (heraldscotland.com, 16 Jul 2016)

RIO SELECTION
He and fellow hammer throwers Chris BENNETT (SCO) and Nick MILLER (ENG) were among the last names added to British athletics squad for Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Asked by UK Athletics to achieve the hammer qualification standard of 77m, or land inside the world's top 16, all three fell marginally short. As a result, they successfully lobbied UK Athletics, arguing they deserved a place at the Games, with UK Athletics performance director Neil BLACK suggesting it may have been "unrealistic" to expect them to achieve qualification, and all three were selected for Rio. "We sat down with Neil and some of his team and said, 'This is what was needed to make a final in Beijing (world championships) last year (2015) and at London (Olympic Games) 2012. The standard does not reflect what the distances have been at major championships'." (heraldscotland.com, 16 Jul 2016)

RECORD BREAKER
In 2015, with his coach absent at his USA base, DRY (with mentoring assistance from Chris BLACK) broke the Scottish record, held by BLACK. (heraldscotland.com, 18 May 2015)
