Sporting relatives:
Father and coach David SMITH represented Australia in race walking at Moscow 1980 Olympic Games (20km and 50km) and Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games (20km). (athletics.org.au, Aug 2016)
Reason: Olympian race walker father David SMITH encouraged him into athletics. Initially preferred sprinting until he took up race walking as a teenager. "All my life I have been surrounded by the track. The week I was born, dad took me to training. I do recall at some stage being pushed around in a pram on a track. I never really chose race walking, it just happened along the way at high school." (olympics.com.au, Jul 2016; couriermail.com.au, 10 Mar 2016)

FATHER KNOWS BEST
On being coached by his father, dual Olympian David SMITH: "As a coach, he knows the ins and outs of race walking and technique. It gets a bit topsy-turvy when I talk to dad, and there can be a few little butting of heads. That is always going to happen but it works really well because we have that trust in each other."
