Over 65 days from early May 2017 to early July, set five long-distance personal bests. At 3000m, ran three PBs, taking 10 seconds off his previous fastest time, and his 7:37.76 was third best in Australian history. At 5000m, a seven-second PB made him fourth fastest in Australian history. At 10,000m, a 30-second improvement moved him to number three all-time. "It was a nice little purple patch but I wasn’t even thinking about times going into those races. I just went in with the mentality that I was going to put myself in a position to compete." (Athlete, Nov 2017; athletics, Nov 2017)

"After Rio in 2016, (coach) Marcus and I realised that we had to change a few things in order to compete at international level. The main thing was improve my strength and conditioning program, so I’d say that would be where the main improvements have come from." (Athlete, Nov 2017)
