Additional information

UK HISTORY
Bronze at Rio 2016 Olympic Games was Great Britain’s first women’s Olympic medal in hammer throw. (bbc.com, 15 Aug 2016)

COMMONWEALTH GAMES
Disappointed with bronze at Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, throwing 68.72m. "I wasn't in the best of shape, both mentally and physically. But always mindful that to get on to the podium at any meeting is an achievement, so mixed emotions." Gold medal throw was 71.97m; in 2016 she threw a personal best 74.54m. (tilastopaja.eu, Nov 2017)

PERFORMING UNDER PRESSURE
Produced best throw on last attempt at Glasgow 2014, Beijing 2015 World Championships and Rio 2016. (Athlete, Dec 2017)

BALLERINA TO HAMMER
Ballerina from age two to 14. Gave it up to concentrate on athletics and netball. "Ballet has really helped me get to where I am with the hammer now. The stage performances gave me a lot of confidence in front of an audience and I'm sure that helps me not to be daunted by competing in the hammer with big crowds watching. Although the technique is not the same, it helps stability and agility." (news.bbc.co.uk, 26 Jan 2012; dailymail.co.uk, 11 Feb 2012)
