Occupation: Athlete, student (Athlete, 6 Oct 2017)
Education: Exercise science at Victoria University, Footscray, Australia
Languages spoken: English, Mandarin
Coach: NATIONAL: Lasse BUNDGAARD (DEN) (badminton.org.au, 7 Apr 2017)
Position style: Right-handed
Reason: “I began through a talent identification program when I was about 12 or 13. You didn’t need any previous experience - you just needed to be generally sporty. I fell in love with badminton. I was pretty good at tennis, but didn’t have the passion for it. Badminton has a lot more decision making and a huge tactical component." (australiaplus.com, 8 Aug 2016)
Ambition: "Our big goal is to hopefully get a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018. Beyond that we just want to keep increasing our ranking. We’re hoping to be top 25 by the end of [2016] and eventually break into the top 10. (heraldsun.com.au, 10 Apr 2016)
Memorable: "Being Oceania women's doubles champion two years in a row and competing at the Commonwealth Games in 2014. (Badminton Oceania YouTube, 18 Apr 2016)
Hero: Chinese badminton player LIN Dan and Danish badminton player Christinna PEDERSEN. (womenofchina.cn, 20 May 2015; thesaturdaypaper.com.au, 27 Feb 2016)
FAMOUS ANCESTRY
Born to a British mother and Chinese father. On her paternal side, she is a fifth generation descendant of KANG Youwei (1858-1927), a political reformer from the Qing Dynasty (1840-1911). Her great-grandmother, KANG Tongwei (1879-1974), daughter of KANG Youwei, is considered China's first female journalist. "I'm really proud to be associated with someone so honourable - who contributed so much to the Chinese revolution. It kind of gives me courage - that I can achieve great things too." (womenofchina.cn, 20 May 2015; australiaplus.com, 8 Aug 2016)
CIRCUS TRICKS
"I did circus when I was about eight to 12 years old. I mainly did flying trapeze, tumbling, some partner balancing acts and learnt some general skills - like spinning plates and hula hoops. I liked the creativity. It wasn't like gymnastics, where you had to conform to certain things." (australiaplus.com, 8 Aug 2016)
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
Her full name is Gronya Jasmine LingDan SOMMERVILLE, with 'LingDan' being phonetically similar to the name of Chinese badminton player LIN Dan. Gronya's other siblings also have names that resemble LIN Dan. (womenofchina.cn, 20 May 2015)
