Hero

He had a stint with the Scottish Rocks and played for Falkirk and he was everything I wanted to be because of his work ethic. He's always sending me motivational emails and works with me back in Scotland." (scotsman.com, 26 Jul 2008)

Additional information

COMMONWEALTH HEARTBREAK
Missed Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games due to injury. "I was in the squad for the 2006 Games but tore my shoulder. I got injured in the December but the recovery time was just too long. At that time, we didn’t have a GB team, so I thought that was me. I cried my wee eyes out. So getting the opportunity now, a little bit later in my career, is a really big thing." (scotsman.com, 29 Jul 2017)

PARTY PANDEMONIUM
Involved in a shooting at a party while attending college in 2006. "I had just left the party but after I had gone, five of my teammates were shot. I eventually made it outside and it was absolutely pandemonium. One got hit twice in the head. We said our goodbyes to him later at the hospital but he survived. I could not speak of it for years. I blamed myself. I was the team captain. I took them all to the party. I am more at ease about it now. I can talk about it now. The priest helped me accept it was not my fault." (dailymail.co.uk, 29 Apr 2017)

FAMILY HEROES
"My biggest hero is my mum. She worked hard for us, sometimes two or three jobs at a time. What I’m most thankful for is, when I turned 16, most people I knew in my neighbourhood were leaving school to work and bring home money for their families. My mum made me stay in school. She made sure I had all the opportunities to go to university and make a life for myself. And my brother is a fighter. He’s one of the most positive guys I’ve ever met. Sometimes he lacks confidence, but he never gives up. He’s four years older and I’ve always idolised him." (mvp247.com, 25 Jul 2012; dailyrecord.co.uk, 10 Jan 2015)

TEEN PROMISE
