Additional information

HERITAGE
Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, fleeing to Canada as a refugee at age five to escape the civil war. The family originally settled in Gatineau before moving to Calgary when KAPINGA was 12. "My dad raised me to be a father in the family, so I was selfless from a young age. I always wanted to make sure that my siblings first had what they needed." (godinos.com, 16 Feb 2018)

JOURNEY
Wanted to play college basketball at a NCAA Division 1 school. After one year at Union College, received an offer to join Utah Valley, but the coaching staff at Union refused to sign his release papers, unless he was going back to Canada. Decided to return to his family in Calgary, contacting Dan VANHOOREN (CAN), head coach at the University of Calgary, inquiring about a spot on the team. VANHOOREN, who was happy with his three point guards, offered him a walk-on position and to sit fourth on the depth chart. An injury in a preseason game gave him the opportunity to start, which saw his minutes rise throughout the season. (godinos.com, 16 Feb 2018)
