Additional information

FED UP
Lost to Luke McCORMACK (ENG) in the third round by a controversial split decision, after toppling the world No. 1, Vitaly DUNAYSTEV, in the second round at the 2017 European Elite Championships in Kharkiv, Ukraine. "That’s worth fuck all to me… I didn’t come here to get to the quarterfinals and qualify for the worlds, that wasn’t the main objective. I’m 24, I made all the big sacrifices to come here and do well, to win gold. I’m just fed up with amateur boxing." (irishnews.com, 22 Jun 2017)

FUNDING
Received funding from Sport Ireland after winning a bronze medal at the 2015 European Games, but that came to an end in early 2017. Has had to pay for trips full-time training in Dublin, while operating on a shoestring budget. After threating to quit amateur boxing in mid-2017, managed to secure the funding for the remainder of 2017. (irishnews.com, 22 Jun 2017; irishmirror.ie, 13 Jul 2017)

HERO
Hailed a hero after tackling two thieves and retrieving stolen items in Belfast in one morning. "It's unbelievable. To happen once, but to happen 30 minutes later. I'm just happy to help out. For the man to get his phone back and the girl to get the purse back... they're important items - it saved them both a lot of hassle." (irishmirror.ie, 14 Sep 2015)

CONTEMPLATION
Been thinking about turning professional for a while. "It always gives me the urge. When I’m there and I’m in that atmosphere, everybody’s asking me, 'Why are you not fighting? When are you going pro?' It’s always the same questions. I wish I was pro. I wish I was 10 fights down the line and going for a title, but I want to win a world medal… if you win a world medal as an amateur, you’re good enough to win a world title as a pro - that’s a fact."
