OPPORTUNITY
Finished third in the 100m freestyle at the national trials in April 2016 while swimming with bronchitis, but received a call-up for the individual spot after Kyle CHALMERS underwent surgery for a heart condition. At the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, made the final and finished seventh in the 100m freestyle in a time of 48.24, after posting a personal best of 47.97 in the semifinal. HEART
Has a heart problem, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), since 2016. Previously has only been an issue when sitting on the couch at home. Now, depending on whether it impacts his career, there may be a discussion about treatment beyond the conservative approach of waiting it out. That didn't work at the Australian Swimming Trials for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in February 2018, with his heart rate refusing to settle, leading to an ambulance and hospital treatment. (smh.com.au, 2 Mar 2018)
RELOCATION
Grew up in Biloela in central Queensland. The local pool closed down, forcing him to move first to Gladstone, then to Brisbane, where he joined coach Dean BOXALL (AUS) at the St Peters squad. (heraldsun.com.au, 27 Jul 2017)
PRIDE
His mother, Michelle, quit her teaching job to help him with his studies while balancing his athletics. (swimswam.com, 28 Aug 2017)
