Additional information

ESCAPE
Family moved from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to Melbourne, Australia, in 1998 to escape political unrest. "When our father was still a child, he had to go through the Pol Pot era. His mum was that upset, crying every day until one of her eyes just fell in. She can only see out of one eye – the other one just closed up and disappeared. When he wants us to work hard, he'll just bring it up. He mentions it to keep us motivated." (theage.com.au, 17 Jun 2014)

STRENGTH
Credited working on a farm with his father for some of his physical strength. "During picking season you carry weights around, like grapes in a bucket. I'm not too sure where I get my strength from. Maybe from there, picking grapes." (abc.net.au, 1 Oct 2010)

FIRST
Became the first Cambodian-born athlete to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games, competing in the men's 62kg division at Glasgow 2014. (abc.net.au, 1 Oct 2010)
